When you ask around Lionheart WORKS about Don Fiori, the response is unanimous—he’s a favorite. Whether he’s tending to vegetables in the Lionheart Gardens or assisting in Culinary Skills, Don brings a calm presence, a big heart, and a willingness to pitch in wherever he’s needed.

Don recently wrapped up his second year as a volunteer job coach with Lionheart WORKS, and his impact has been felt across the program. His journey to Lionheart began through a shared love of biking, when fellow cycling friends Trish Kent, another Lionheart volunteer, introduced him to our community. What began as a simple introduction turned into a rewarding and meaningful part
of Don’s life.

Originally from the shores of Lake Superior in northern Michigan, Don holds a degree in mechanical engineering and built a career in oil refining and transportation. These days, he’s “on a different kind of path”—supporting young adults in their vocational journeys, and riding bikes with his two adult daughters whenever possible.

When asked about his favorite WORKS activity, Don humbly replies, “Just being present with the participants puts a smile on my face.” But one standout moment for him was helping plant and care for vegetables at the farm—an experience filled with learning, growth, and plenty of dirt under the fingernails. “The weeding, watering, and harvesting was an adventure,” he says. “The staff, participants, and volunteers all grow throughout the process.”

After searching for the right volunteer fit, Don says Lionheart WORKS has far exceeded his expectations. His advice for others considering volunteering? “Give it a try…you will be rewarded in many ways.”
